I am fascinated by the field of narrative coaching and love reading the work of Dr David Drake, the founder of Narrative Coaching.
In his most recent post, Dr Drake challenges our definitions of ‘time on’ and ‘time off’. He suggests we have it all wrong with our work-oriented lives, as this is not the pace at which we were designed to live. What we currently think of as time ‘off’ is actually when we are most ‘on’.
“We fill up our days with so much, forever battling this lingering sense we are permanently ‘behind’. We forget that we have within us the capacity to choose a new story … to return to our ourselves (and each other).” [Dr David Drake, founder of Narrative Coaching]
Most people are overwhelmed by too much to do and too many expectations of us. The last thing most people want is more goals, but coaching does not have to be about setting goals or getting somewhere. In many cases coaching will help you determine where you can say “no” or what you have taken on that you can let go of. In turn, saying no allows you to focus on fewer things and make room in your life for a “yes”.
