University Leaders & Leadership Teams

Prior to establishing my coaching practice in 2014, I enjoyed a successful 25-year career in the higher education sector. I worked at three Australian Universities: UNSW (Canberra), The University of Queensland and University of Newcastle. I love working with individual leaders and leadership teams, to enhance their ability to lead effectively through challenge and change.

Executive Coaching is primarily about being the best leader you can be. There is no set structure/content, as the coaching engagement is bespoke and designed to meet your specific needs as an individual. A key outcome of executive coaching is gaining greater self-awareness of personal learning needs so you can make adjustments to what you are doing, and these incremental changes make you more effective.

“Julie is a wonderful leadership coach who can bring out the best in you, even after just one session. The sessions are well structured, logical, and packed full of genuine listening, advice, and support. Julie is attentive, focussed, and human and brings a wealth of real-world expertise and guidance to share, backed by theory, models, and knowledge that can be used immediately and are tailored to what you have brought to the session, not a cookie-cutter approach. It is not an exaggeration to say that one session with Julie accomplishes more than a year of working alone!”

Deputy Head of School, Australian University (2021)

In the Emerging & Aspiring Leaders Program participants reflect on their leadership capabilities, their natural strengths, and the areas they want to develop. Two surveys are completed prior to the program’s commencement, to identify ‘top strengths’ and the other ‘best qualities’.

Each session has a clear focus and is highly experiential, with an action-learning approach that enables the learning to be applied to solve real work challenges.

Through the Program I learned:
“I feel the sessions brought out the best in me. I have learnt to carefully consider my actions and choices before I speak with other professionals, so that I can support them and communicate my intentions with more clarity.”
““Useful, targeted and practical. The course makes the participant reflect, consider and become more self aware from the get go, creating tangible opportunity to implement their learning in the real world straight away.”

Quotes from Participants

Do you want your leaders to add skills to their toolkit for growing and developing others? The Coaching Conversations for Leaders Program aims to help you understand the value of coaching and the difference between coaching conversations and the many other types of conversations leaders need to have.

Participants will develop fundamental coaching skills and build the confidence to set up a coaching conversation for success. The one day program can be combined with one-to-one mentor coaching and small group coaching, to embed skills.

“Loved the mixed approach which allowed me to listen, learn and then apply the strategies. Really appreciated the time to practice and being vulnerable within a safe environment.”

“Really valuable information and strategies to build culture … Things that can be applied straight away, which is great.”

“Fantastic! Informative, well-paced, plenty of time for questions, conversation and practice.”

Coaching Conversations Program Participants (2021-23)

Do you want your school leaders to feel less angst when preparing for uncomfortable conversations? In the Challenging Conersations Program we look at challenging conversations: what they are, what stops us having them, and the factors that influence successful delivery.

When handled well a challenging conversation allows you to broach a difficult topic before it becomes a bigger issue, provides an opportunity to increase trust, and can improve the relationship.

Coaching Conversations Program Participants (2021-23)

Unlike large training organisations who deliver off-the-shelf programs, I do not take a “one size fits all” approach. Instead, I will work closely with you and your team to develop a half-day or full-day workshop which is tailored to meet the specific needs of your school.

I will design and prepare a bespoke session for your team, based on the outcomes you want from the day.

“I have had Julie working as a Coach with my senior management team over the past nine months during a time of significant change. During this time she has provided consistent guidance and insight in a 1-1 coaching capacity, tactfully offering strategies that encourage the individual to create their own solutions, and be empowered in the process. Julie has been instrumental in maintaining and increasing the performance of the individuals and the team. I have also been part of this process and found Julie’s approach to be professional, approachable and sensible – so that the lesson learned stays well after the session ends. Highly recommended.” Executive Director, Australian University (2017)

"Approachable, understanding, challenging but not confrontational. I always felt that I could discuss my career and personal goals without judgement. I liked how Julie took the view of me as a person, it was not always about career ambitions, but truely a focus on where I could be the best (and happiest) I could be".

Senior Academic Leader, Higher Education Sector (2024)
"Julie, you are masterful at jointly creating a maximum environment for me as the client to thrive. You exercised great care, follow-up, expertise and attention to both strategic and operational dimensions to the goals I wanted to achieve and you helped me to ‘mess around’ with my worldviews which is exactly what I wanted and needed. I felt challenged within a secure environment and you demonstrated authenticity and passion in how you truly paid attention, deeply listened, and shone the mirror back at me in productive ways so I could achieve growth and progress. I felt empowered and achieved breakthroughs, on both personal and professional levels, and for that all I am truly grateful”.

“Kind, clear, helped to guide my thinking in a positive and non-confrontational way. I love that Julie was able to reflect key comments of mine back to me - it's amazing how clear my own thoughts seemed with the help of Julie to draw them out. “Julie is highly perceptive and deeply insightful. She helped me identify critical issues that I needed to address personally, as well as the issues that were affecting my working relationship with my teams and issues within and between my teams. She suggested practical approaches and actions that I could take – which I did – that led to fruitful and helpful conversations and interactions in the organisation, which in turn led to positive results in staff morale, behaviour, and performance.”

"I’d lost my mojo; Julie set me on a path to get it back.  She listened. She challenged. She armed me with tools. She broadened my thinking about my life, my work and ultimately, myself. Our coaching sessions made what had been a muddle in my head keeping me awake at night, merge in to a clear way forward. And I’m grateful for that."

“Julie’s coaching so far has proved invaluable to me. Julie stretches my thinking to come up with solutions to complex problems, outside of my own network, drawing out the skills or talents that I do not expose readily. This coaching is important for my leadership role and future aspirations, so I can become the best version of me, and to enable me to reach my maximum capabilities.”

“I have found coaching sessions with Julie to be incredibly motivating. The sessions themselves have made me shut out all the external ‘noise’ and hear my ‘inner dialogue’, those excuses which I have subconsciously gathered about myself to justify my own inaction. Tangible proof of the power of coaching was my success in being shortlisted for a Senior Management role recently. If I had not been coached, I would not have believed in myself enough to have applied. Coaching sessions with Julie were sometimes confronting but always, ultimately empowering. From it I made a personal commitment to change, risk and grow.”

“My coaching experience [with Julie] has had a profound effect on me. Julie’s subtle yet highly effective coaching has brought to the fore thoughts and aspirations I have internalised or put aside and made me reassess what I really want with my life, both professionally and personally. I always come away from our sessions re-energised about what I am doing and how I am going about it. A hugely positive experience!"

“Julie is an excellent coach – she has the skill of being able to bring out insights from your inner-self that you were unaware of and help you to take a new direction on the basis of this. She helps you to apply this understanding to improve both as a person and as a professional."

“Julie’s coaching has enabled me to face challenges and find solutions by putting things in perspective. I was able to focus on my core values, set new goals and look to the future. Julie’s calm and supportive personality made me feel relaxed and able to concentrate on aspects of my life I could control while minimising the impact of those aspects I can’t. I would highly recommend Julie as a coach for anyone looking to achieve personal growth and success.”
